WordPress SEO – 3 Areas of Focus

WordPress SEO is important, and while WordPress does a lot to optimize pages on it’s own, there is still room for improvement. Here are a number of things we’ve found that will really help your WordPress SEO efforts.

On page SEO

WordPress SEO by Yoast will help you optimize your title, description, and post so that the search engines can display your page correctly and accurately. This usually involves targeting each page and post toward specific keywords that the plugin can help optimize. It’s the plugin we use and recommend for on page SEO.

Page speed and caching

Page speed is important to the search engines because it’s important to their users. Slow pages don’t get used or ranked as much as fast ones, even if the content is better on the slower site. There are a couple of things you can do here, one make sure you have a fast reliable hosting provider and optimize your site with a caching plugin.

Hosting is a topic for another day, we offer hosting and can usually offer recommendation or warnings about many of the popular hosting providers, contact us if you have questions regarding hosting.

There are two popular caching plugins, W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache. Both offer tons of options and speed improvements for your site. W3 Total Cache allow for more customization and WP Super Cache offers user friendliness. In most cases we recommend WP Super Cache configured for the best performance.

Nothing will remove your site from the search engines faster then a malware or virus infection on your site. The first defense is to keep WordPress updated along with it’s plugins and themes. Many website attacks are targeted to sites running out of date code. The second thing it to install a security plugin.

WP Support HQ keeps all your plugins up to date for you, but you can also make sure do update them often yourself.

We use a couple of different plugins, but the most important thing to stop is brute force login attacks. This is when someone tries passwords until they find one that works. Anti-Malware and iThemes Security both have good brute force protection. Even with this protection you should use strong passwords.
